Best Bar None (BBN) has identified 50 further areas to establish the scheme, which rewards best practice in responsible retailing.

BBN has also appointed public affairs company Politics International to raise the profile of the scheme.

"The first full year of the operation of Best Bar None saw a great deal of developments and we would like to see more in 2009," said BBN national chairman Lord Redesdale. "A priority is the make the public aware of Best Bar None and also to ensure that decision makers in Westminster are clear about what we do and why it is essential to the night time economy."

He added: "On the ground we would like to see more schemes being set up and to this end we have identified a number of areas and towns we will be actively targeting in partnership with their local police forces and local authorities.

"Every month we have new areas expressing an interest and are hoping to harness this enthusiasm and to make Best Bar None even bigger in 2009."
