Pubs that go the extra furlong to cater for horseracing fans have been rewarded.

The regional winners of the Racing Pub of the Year 2008, awarded by The Publican, Racing UK and the Racing Post, have been unveiled.

The Yard, in Newmarket, Suffolk; the Red Lion in Wetherby, West Yorkshire; Dan Linehan's Bar in Kilarney, Ireland; the Plough Inn, in Cheltenham, in Gloucestershire; and last year's champions the Engineer, in Brighton, Sussex, are all in with a shout of winning the overall award.

Phil Reeves, licensee at the Engineer, said: "Horseracing forms the heart of our pub so everyone is delighted that we've defended our title and are recognised for our passion for the sport."

Sheila Watts, of the Yard, said: "It's an honour to receive this regional award. We pride ourselves on giving customers the best racing experience possible and are thrilled that the Racing Post, Racing UK and The Publican have recognised this."

Each regional winner wins a day at the races for 12 regulars.

The overall winner will be announced later this month.
