Culture secretary: end all inclusive deals
Culture secretary Andy Burnham has called for an end to all-inclusive and speed drinking promotions in pubs.
Speaking at the Business in Sport and Lesiure conference, Burnham said that more must be done by the industry to act responsibly if he is to be the advocate of the leisure sector in Government.
"It is time to call time on the most irresponsible alcohol promotions," he said. "They are the kind of promotions that lead to speed drinking or don't place a limit on the amount of alcohol people can drink.
"We are living in a period where trading is going to be tough and more difficult than it has been for a while.
"I recognise my duty to speak up for you and will do all I can to help the industry in these difficult times.
"I am pleased there are areas where we can point to where we have worked together to address issues and concerns.
"I do see the vast majority are responsible businesses but are at times let down by the small minority.
"Those are things for the industry to address and if we can address them, it is easier for me to talk on your behalf."
Burnham's call comes as the Home Affairs Select Committee called for a complete ban on drinks promotions in pubs, loss-leading alcohol sales in pubs and minimum pricing.
Neil Goulden, chairman of Business in Sport and Leisure, called for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to talk up for the needs of the leisure and hospitality sector.
"I would like to see the DCMS become more of a sponsorship department for our industry and less of a regulatory one.
"We need more help for our industry."
