The Compasses in Pattiswick, Essex has been crowned Great British Pub of the Year.

Licensees Jono and Jane Clark received their award at last night's glitzy awards bash held at the Park Lane Hilton.

Compere for the awards, which recognised the very best licensees across the country, was funnyman Hugh Dennis.

The Clark's also scooped the awards for Family Pub of the Year and East Anglia Pub of the Year.

"The instant customers cross the threshold of the Compasses, they know they're entering a pub full of atmosphere and where the quality of service is going to be of the highest order," said the judging panel.

"Everything about the interior and exterior of the freehouse has been specified by Jane and Jono Clark to give customers an experience they won't forget.

"The food offering is specifically targeted at family groups and is wholesome and freshly-prepared.

"Although the Compasses is off the beaten track, many of the customers who have found it have made repeat visits. Jono and Jane have created a destination pub par excellence."
