S&NPE launches poker-night plan
Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises (S&NPE) is rolling out a poker-night package to 200 community pubs.
It follows a trial that saw beer and cider sales increase by an average of 3% and as much as 10% in some pubs.
The package includes equipment such as poker chips and a poker table-top, plus a training DVD and guide. Day-long training sessions are available.
S&NPE head of marketing Matthew Woodward said: "In challenging trading conditions, it is more important than ever for the pub to give the public additional reasons to visit.
"The trial's results are great news for our lessees, proving that done properly, poker can increase traffic and build business on traditionally quieter weekday nights as well as bring those new customers back on other nights too.
"And as our lessees do not need to bring in a third party to run their nights and the company's poker packs are free, their overheads are minimal, allowing them to get high returns from the increase in business."
S&NPE licensee David Prunty, of the Rising Sun, at Hazel Grove, Stockport, said the promotion helped double takings on Mondays. He now hosts poker on Sundays and Tuesdays too.
He said: "It's one of the best things I have done in the pub. Very few pubs in the area are doing pub poker so it gives the Rising Sun a real point of difference."
