Greene King has named Euan Venters as the head of its Belhaven brewery and pubs business.

Venters was formerly global president of food manufacturing group Sara Lee's bodycare business.

The appointment follows the retirement of long-time Belhaven boss Stuart Ross.

Ross announced earlier this year that he wanted to step down to focus on his own personal interests.

At the time of the Greene King's acquisition of Belhaven in 2005 it had always been planned for the executive that Ross would "conduct an orderly handover".

Ross, who led a £23.5m management buyout of Belhaven in 1993, remained at the helm after Greene King acquired the Dunbar-based business for £187m.

He since successfully steered the group through the trials of the smoking ban in Scotland.

Venters is not the first ex-Sara Lee executive to join Greene King. The brewer's chief executive Rooney Anand joined from the company in 2001.

Before joining Sara Lee, Euan worked for Grand Metropolitan on the launch of Fosters draught in the UK.

Anand said: "Euan loves beer and pubs and brings over 25 years experience building major branded consumer goods to Greene King and the Belhaven business.

"Euan takes over the reins from Stuart, whose long and distinguished career with Belhaven has seen him build the business into what it is today.

"I'd like to thank him for the legacy he leaves behind that goes beyond the financial performance of Belhaven. He has created, with the support of the management team, a very strong culture that reflects his passion and work ethic and a robust business model which has an enviable track record of success."
