Abbot Ale has grown consistently, even over the past decade when the overall cask market has been in decline, says Greene King.

"We're well on track to build the best beer business in Britain," Justin Adams, managing director of Greene King Brewing Company, told the MA today.

Discussing one of his leading brands, Abbot Ale - which is the number two premium cask beer in Britain and the number two premium cask beer in London - he said: "Abbot has grown consistently, even over the past decade when the overall cask market has been in decline.

"During the past year, sales were up a highly creditable 12% on the previous year. This shows that there still is significant demand for great quality ales, well presented and effectively marketed.

"If you look at beacons of excellence in the British brewing industry, I honestly believe Abbot is there at the top."

To celebrate the fast-approaching Great British Beer Festival, the Morning Advertiser this week (July 10) looks at the Top 10 Premium Ales.

Our table of the Top 10 premium on-trade brands to March this year (MA 10 July, page 39) contained an error.

The data consultants who supplied us with the table have omitted two names from the list - Abbot Ale and Timothy Taylor's Landlord.

Apologies from them and us to both companies for this mistake.

The correct table is:

1. Marston's Pedigree

2. Greene King Abbot Ale

3. Draught Bass

4. Old Speckled Hen

5. Courage Directors

6. Bombardier

7. Landlord

8. Spitfire

9. Broadside

10. St Austell Tribute
