Safest pub cellar will scoop £2,000
One licensee could win £2,000 for having the safest cellar, thanks to Boc Suresevre's Safe Cellar Award.
The award is designed to reward safe cellar operation, particularly in regard to use and storage of compressed gases.
The overall winner will receive £2,000 worth of travel vouchers from Virgin Holidays.
Entrants have to answer 10 multiple choice safety questions and complete a 25 word tie-breaker about what makes a safe cellar.
The 10 outlets which supply the highest number of correct answers and the best tie-breakers will then be surveyed by a BOC technical expert in order to decide the final winner.
The award is part of a wider campaign by BOC, a member of the Linde Group, to raise awareness of the dangers associated with drinks dispense gases, nitrogen and CO2.
"The BOC Sureserve Safe Cellar Award is about raising awareness of safety with drinks dispense gases and setting a safety benchmark, especially for those licensees new to the trade," said BOC Sureserve product manager Carl Goode.
"There is a need for greater vigilance in the trade - both nitrogen and CO2 are hospitality 'staples' and yet many licensees are seemingly unaware of the dangers and what safety measures are needed to prevent an incident in the cellar.
"Aside from knowing how to store and handle cylinders the successful entrant will have to demonstrate an advanced understanding of gases safety, such as how to spot the telltale signs of leakage as well as all the required markings, labels and tags on a drinks dispense gas cylinder."
The BOC Sureserve Safe Cellar Award is free to enter.
Entries can be made online at www.bocsureserve.co.uk until 30 September, 2008.
