Bar Talk
Do your customers care how environmentally friendly your business is?

Not that I'm aware of — but that's not the point. We take a lot of steps to minimise our impact on the environment, including recycling glass and cardboard and using low-energy light bulbs. It's not something we use as a marketing tool because we should all be doing our bit anyway.

I'm not sure — it's a difficult thing to measure. When we went from managers to tenants we started recycling everything we could and we did discuss it with customers. I think our customers tend to be older and environmentally aware — I'm sure they see it as a plus, but we don't shout about it.

I don't think they do care. We do all we possibly can to help the environment and I honestly don't think it's ever been a talking point at the bar. It's something that the big chains use as a marketing tool at the moment, but I don't think it's going to have much pulling power in a village local like this.

Our environmentally friendly policy has been popular — although it does not necessarily generate additional footfall, it reduces some of our costs, particularly on power usage. Some of our customers really care. I think that the others will be forced to care sooner rather than later.
