Licensees are being told to listen up as new noise regulations come into force next month.

Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations, which become law in pubs on April 6, bosses must ensure staff are not subjected to average noise levels above 87 decibels - music in pubs often hits 90 decibels.

But according to deaf and hard of hearing charity RNID, few publicans are even aware that the changes are on the horizon.

An RNID survey revealed 31 per cent of small businesses had not heard of the legislation and 67 per cent had no plans to ensure staff have hearing protection

RNID chairman of Trustees Gerald Corbett said: "At the moment the issue is complicated by legislation and jargon and we aim to make it simpler and easier for publicans to comply. The government has let the industry down with the lack of information."

To help the RNID is teaming up with thepublican.com to offer booklets of information, posters and cut price earplugs and noise monitors for licensees.

Corbett added: "It is very important that publicans get totally up to speed with the implications of the new regulations.

"As the leading charity for the deaf and hard of hearing we are perfectly positioned to help.

"We are developing these packs which will assist with publicans complying with regulations."

The laws came into force in most sectors in 2006, but pub and clubs were handed a two-year exemption.

However the government will not issue guidance for pubs until July - three months after the regulations come in.

For more information on how to get hold of an information pack call the RNID on 0808 808 0123.
