How was trade on Mothers' Day?

It was a very good day for us. We didn't do anything different but we had about 200 in for lunch, staggered over the day. We served a plated roast dinner at £6.95 and most people had a starter and dessert as well. There were quite a few mothers and sons, but most of the trade was large groups of extended family. We had a quiz that attracted 80 punters in the evening so we were full all day.

We had a very busy day at the Cutter. I don't like putting on a one-off menu that's more expensive on special days because I think people feel like they're being ripped off. We did about 600 meals over the whole day and the average spend per head was about £11, the Sunday roast was particularly popular. We were booked out and had to offer customers trying to get a lunch booking a table at six.

It was a big day, we probably did about 680 covers over the day. It took a lot of organisation - especially from the kitchen staff who worked hard to set up properly. Once the kitchen is sorted everything else falls into place on a bust day. We offered our normal bar menu and some specials. We didn't do quite as many as a normal Sunday, but spend per head was higher as everyone had three courses.

We don't do any food so it's not a particularly busy day for us. But it was a good steady day - better than a normal Sunday anyway. There was a nice mixture of customers, including some sons taking their mums for a quiet drink and the normal crowd of regulars at the bar. Days like Valentine's Day and Mothers' Day aren't that big for us.
