A trade group has urged the Prime Minister not to underestimate the importance of the off-trade in the debate around alcohol and disorder. The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) wrote to Number 10 before last week's breakfast meeting, saying far more alcohol is bought in shops than pubs. The ALMR wants Gordon Brown to understand that official statistics showing that alcohol sales are split 68:32 in favour of the on-trade do not reflect the amount sold, as figures are in value terms.
Fullers has announced a record-breaking set of results, with adjusted profits up 11% to £12.7m on last year. Revenue for the six months to 29 September was up 3% to £93.3m, while profit before tax was up 16%. Like-for-like sales at its invested managed houses were up 5.3%, while tenanted division operating profits were up 4%. Operating profits for brewing also saw an increase of 2%.
Children as young as five are to get lessons on responsible drinking. New guidance for schools from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, produced at the request of the Department of Health, spells out what primary and secondary school pupils should be taught to foster a sensible attitude. Schools are expected to incorporate the guidance as soon as they can.
JD Wetherspoon (JDW) is to offer free and unlimited Wi-Fi internet access at all of its pubs in England, Scotland and Wales from Monday 3 December. Customers will be able to log on for an unlimited period of time. JDW boss John Hutson said: "We are keen to provide our customers with as many different services as possible."
