M&B trials energy saving devices

The new-build venue, which opened this week, includes a fully-insulated cellar that houses a cooling conversion system to maintain drinks temperatures while using less energy. Low energy light bulbs have been installed and there is a system to recycle rain water for the garden. The impact of the devices will be monitored and considered for the rest of M&B's estate.

This year the brewer hopes the bar - measuring 120ft with space for 480 pints - could be the longest ever.

Fresh herb sales reach £46m

The popularity of fresh herbs is surging in Britain, says a new survey from Mintel. Sales increased by more than 50% in the past five years to reach £46m this year. "Fresh herbs are flourishing, not least because they fit in with the trend towards using fresh and natural produce. They are also good for you; they season without adding calories and are often seen as a key ingredient in good quality recipes," said Mintel senior analyst Katy Child.
