Amanda Green: the recovery from the floods
Last Wednesday the water had gone from the building but the electricity was still compromised. We were still living through the majority of the building and as a woman I felt vulnerable, and didn't know what had been switched off. On Friday an electrician came to make us safe and they turned off five fuses - which was worrying.
We are a society where health and safety has gone a bit crazy. No electrician would come in until the water had gone. I was getting a bit worried at the time because I knew I wasn't safe. The first day, I could understand it. That's life, it's just one of those things. I don't mean to sound sexist, but most girls don't know anything about electricity!
At the weekend we swept the whole car park and put hanging baskets outside. There are still about six cars left in the car park, and I still don't know who to contact about them. There is also a bridge of tables residents constructed to get over our fence and into the car park, a lot of old people live nearby and people were helping them out.
It's really surreal, people keep asking us if we're open for business, and I can understand why because it looks great from the front. From the outside you'd think there was nothing wrong. It's unlikely people will dump stuff if they see the property being kept. My fear is that you end up being a dumping ground.
For the first week I went into autopilot mode, but now the frustration is setting in because of the little things. For example, it took me three days to find out where my car was. I have also been trying to find out exactly what the work schedule's going to be from Greene King. They're doing their best, but they've got 7 or 8 pubs that have been flooded and are having problems getting the equipment themselves.
My staff have been absolutely fantastic, they have done jobs I can't thank them enough for, I wouldn't have known where to start they've been over every day and been up to their knees in pooh, and managed to salvage a lot of my stuff. The building at the moment hasn't been sprayed, I'm a little bit concerned about that.
I'm sitting outside in a scabby pair of trousers and sandals, they say you can use the water for bathing in, but you don't want to hang around for that long! It looks like it's going to be three months before we get back on track. I do have bad days and end up feeling like Victor Meldrew in the afternoon, but we've just got to get on with it. The weather today is actually beautiful, what we need is a few nice days.
