Greene King is running a national ad campaign - with money-off vouchers - to get punters in the pub for the start of the English smoking ban.

Under the heading "The Sign of a Great Pub", ads will run in the Sun and the Times newspapers for the first week of the ban, which begins on 1 July.

There is no doubt the landscape of pubs will change once the English smoking ban comes in Greene King chief executive Rooney Anand

They will feature vouchers offer £5-off food purchases. It follows last year's ad campaign for ITV1's Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

Greene King chief executive Rooney Anand said: "Last year's decision to take the brand onto TV was bold for a pub group but it proved very successful in terms of our profile.

"This new phase of The Sign of a Great Pub campaign is about converting that raised profile into footfall - encouraging consumers to taste Greene King hospitality first hand. This promotion runs across both our managed and tenanted houses which also makes it a unique campaign in our industry.

"There is no doubt the landscape of pubs will change once the English smoking ban comes in and our own research shows that pubs will now attract a new breed of customer, especially women and families who may have stayed away in the past.

"While we have invested heavily in facilities to ensure those people who still want to light up can do so in new outside areas we have also increased our food ranges to ensure we cater for a lot more tastes. These vouchers are our invitation to the public to come and try it."

The vouchers are valid for any 2 adults spending more than £10 on food only, and will be redeemable in more than 1,000 Greene King pubs. Vouchers will direct consumers to a website to check locations.
