Pubs are being provided with detailed safety guidance from the Association of Chief Police Officers to help them counter terrorism.

Both a leaflet and a more detailed booklet have been produced by its National Counter Terrorism Security Office and will be disseminated to licensed premises by police forces over the next few months.

Jim Maietta from the ACPO National Counter Terrorism Security Office said: "Although there is no specific threat to pubs, bars and clubs, the threat of terrorist attack in the UK remains real and serious.

"All licensed premises across the country have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their staff and customers. The guide and leaflet set out clear, detailed advice on how those in the licensing trade can protect those in their premises."

There are a number of simple steps that can be taken to help safeguard against the threat of attack:

• Search your premises (inside and out) before, during and after opening hours;

• Remain vigilant during opening hours;

• Clearly communicate evacuation responsibilities and roles to staff, clearly define routes and exits well and regularly exercise evacuation plans;

• If you operate a CCTV system, ensure that the date and time stamps are accurate, the system is well maintained and that recorded images are clearly identifiable and retained for at least 31 days;

• Report suspicious activity - vigilant staff will notice suspicious activity and behaviour;

• If any locations need specialist counter terrorism security advice, they should make contact with their local force counter terrorism security advisor (CTSA);

• If you have suspicions about somebody's activities or behaviour, call the Anti-Terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321. If you have information that requires urgent or immediate police response, always dial 999.

The booklet and leaflet have been produced following close consultation with the British Beer & Pub Association, BEDA, National Pub Watch, Institute of Licensing and the Department for Culture, Media & Sport. Go to www.nactso.gov.uk to read the leaflet.
