Pubs to house 500 post offices by 2009
Pubs are set to house up to 500 post offices after the Government confirmed it would axe 2,500 by 2009.
The Government has earmarked pubs as an ideal location for 500 "outreach post offices" to be set up in small remote communities.
Pub is the Hub has been involved in detailed discussions with the Post Office and begun matching outlets on its database with areas where closures are likely to take effect.
The community-focused organisation has already set up post office services in 100 pubs in the last four years.
"It is great that the Government has recognised the role pubs can play in the community," said Pub is the Hub co-ordinator John Longden.
"With the development of our regional steering committees we have the people on the ground and are ready for it. I am hoping we can play a leading role in providing sites which can be utilised."
Longden said the average cost of setting up a pub service was between £10,000 and £15,000.
"We would like to see funds set aside by the Government or the Post Office as soon as possible. When a post office closes it is important to act quickly," he said.
Hilary Scott, of the Black Swan in Wistow, North Yorkshire, runs a post office from her pub.
"The main drive for us was to service the community. Now the pub has become a real focal point of the village. The post office brings in new people and if they're coming here to do their banking or send a parcel, the chances are that we can encourage them to buy a drink or snack.
"I am paid monthly by the Post Office and get commission from services I offer."
