Red Cow, Chrisall, Essex
Agent: Christie+Co
Chris and Alice Cozens bought the freehold of the Red Cow from Christie+Co off an asking price of £475,000. Chris worked for a digital service provider and Alice worked in telecommunications.
Chris Cozens said: "It's been something we've been looking to do for about two years but there aren't many good-quality
freeholds on the market and those that are get a lot of
attention from pubcos. We've always been interested in the hospitality industry - and we really like the idea of working together as a couple."
The Grade-II listed pub probably dates back to Norman times. It features a thatched roof and low beamed ceilings. It is the only pub in Chrishall. The pub was closed a month before the sale was completed and the couple plan to keep it shut for a further six weeks while they carry out a major re-fit. Cozens said: "It was in a pretty bad state when we moved in - very grubby. We've had to start again with the interior. The building is great, though, especially the thatched roof."
The couple plans to increase the drinks offering by
serving local cask ales and developing a wine list with Berry Bros. Food will also be introduced. Cozens said: "We're
advertising locally for a chef at the moment. We're going to offer simple pub grub priced £7 to £10 for a main course"
Bill Colquhoun, of Christie+Co, said: "The sale of the Red Cow confirms the continued high demand for privately-owned freehouses throughout the region. Private buyers are competing with corporate operators for the limited supply of freehouses available for sale."
