A retired businessman, who was fed up with licensees complaining about spirit bottles dropping off the wall behind the bar, claims to have invented a bottle holder for the 21st century.

Jim Collyer has designed a new way of holding spirits bottles, which he maintains is much safer and will save licensees money.

He said: "I've seen pubs holding their bottles in place using elastic bands. Licensees I've spoken to have all said that something needs to be done. The bottle-holder design hasn't changed in more than 30 years - they are dangerous and licensees can lose a lot of money when bottles start dropping off walls."

Collyer has produced prototypes of his new bottle holder and is looking for help to promote and market it.

He said: "All the people I've shown them to have said they think they are a great idea.

"The new design holds any shape of bottle and they are easier for bar staff to reach."
