What people talk about in the pub is the subject of a recent survey conducted for the Beautiful Beer campaign.

It reveals that British men are three times more likely to be talking about their wife or girlfriend over a pint in the pub than they were a year ago - a shift from 9% to 26%.

The figures also show that the number of men becoming more comfortable talking about their sex lives has risen from 24% to 27%.

This set intrepid Snifter thinking about how to put a different spin on the results.

With 27% talking about their sex lives, but only 26% talking about their wives or girlfriends, 1% of the 1,900 interviewees are clearly revealing that whoever they had sex with wasn't their wife or girlfriend.

And of the 25 to 34 age-bracket, 34% chat about sex, compared to 12% among 55 to 64-year-olds.

Could it be that this older group don't have much to talk about - or is it just that the younger drinkers need to keep up their libido?

Northerners talk more about their social lives (58%). and those in the north west are happy to chat about politics over a pint (38%), but are the least comfortable talking about sex (16%).

As for which sex loves spreading gossip, women win hands-down - 33%, compared with only 19% of men.

For once, Snifter is saying nothing.

Topics discussed in the pub also varies across the UK - Scots talk more than others about sport (48%). The progress of the Scots football team compared with that of the English and Welsh suggests Scots may like to talk about their success while those south of the border prefer to drown their sorrows.
