BII offers better insurance deal

The British Institute of Innkeeping is offering its members improved insurance benefits. The new package, via insurer Marsh, includes paying by interest-free instalments and help with claims. Steve Howe, BII head of membership, said: "I've been impressed with Marsh's desire to work with us to ensure our members have a high quality insurance package available at a discounted BII price."

Chefs have until 12 April to enter the Morning Advertiser/PubChef Battle of the Barbecue competition and win a trip to the USA. Three finalists will be chosen to compete in a cook-off in the Midlands in May. Policeman banned from pubs for life

A policeman has been banned from pubs in a

Welsh town for life after he was allegedly involved in an row in a bar. Cardigan's Pubwatch scheme has reportedly also banned a second constable for six months. The restriction only applies when they are off duty, and does not prevent them attending emergencies in pubs. Dyfed-Powys police has launched an inquiry into an incident at Schooner's wine bar in Ceredigion last month.

Palmer retires from Young's

Brian Palmer, a Young's non-executive director, has retired from the board. Chris Sandland, Young's chairman, said: "With a background in advertising and marketing consultancy, Brian made a

particular contribution in development of the Young's brand. We thank him for his enormous contribution to the company over the years

and wish him well for a happy retirement."

Unsolicited bids made for DLL

Whitbread has confirmed receiving a number of unsolicited bids for its David Lloyd Leisure business.

In a statement, the company said: "These are in the early stages of being evaluated to assess whether their further consideration would be in the interests of shareholders. The board would like to make it clear that no decision to sell DLL has been made."
