Man told to take down English flag
A man from Bedford - the home town of patriotic brewer Wells & Youngs - has been ordered to take down his flag of St George because it "advertises" England. Builder Darren Gray was told to take it down in a council letter because it was advertising. He told the Sun that he phoned the council to ask what he was advertising and was told "England".
SA Brains event a breath of fresh air
Over 200 visitors visited SA Brains' "Breath of Fresh Air" event, which gave tips on how to plan for the smoking ban. The event, held at the Wharf in Cardiff, included exhibitions from suppliers of items such as fresh food, catering equipment and outdoor furniture ideas. There was also a question and answer session with Welsh rugby stars Mark Evans and Ian Jones.
EU smoking ban may be introduced
Brussels could force all EU countries to ban smoking in pubs, bars and restaurants under new plans. EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou launched a public debate on the proposal this week. Many ideas, from self-regulation to EC legislation, are up for discussion.
Just ask where food comes from
Celebrity pub chef Mike Robinson has joined the campaign to encourage customers to ask where their food has come from. The Pot Kiln at Frilsham, Berkshire, where Robinson works, has signed up to the Country Land and Business Association's Just Ask scheme. Meat served at the Pot Kiln is likely to have travelled fewer than 10 miles from field to plate.
Scotch whisky website launches
The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has launched a new website to teach people about the category. The site, at www.scotch-whisky.org.uk, includes a distillery tour, video and cocktail recipes. It also have a responsible drinking message and lists all 53 SWA member companies.
MA Plan for the Ban roadshow
