Laura Condliffe
White Lion, Barthomley, Cheshire
Twenty-five year old Laura Condliffe is proof that tender years are no barrier to success. Laura has been tenant of the White Lion at Barthomley for more than 12 months and has transformed the picturesque village inn into a popular and lucrative venue.
During her first six months at the Marston's Pub Company outlet, Laura increased sales by about 60%. Business also increased during the second six months as the emphasis on food sales was expanded.
Given a chance
Laura remarks: "People at the brewery probably thought I was a bit young to take over a pub, but they were prepared to give me a chance and I was determined not to let them down. I used to work as a barmaid here, so I knew the pub and customers, and was convinced I could move the business forward."
Old world charm
The thatch-roofed White Lion is a gem of a pub. It dates from 1583 and has a wealth of original features that make it popular throughout south Cheshire and north Staffordshire. The trade split is 80:20 in favour of wet sales and a big draw for the drinking fraternity is the range of five cask beers.
Reshaping the business
On arrival, Laura identified two areas for growth. She explains: "A better food service and making extra use of the upstairs function room were areas that needed attention."
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed and Laura was highly commended at the pubco's latest awards.
Laura says: "People at the company say I am only the third tenant of the pub since the Second World War, so I hope I am in for a long and happy stay here."
