Brighton pub given glass ban
A Brighton pub, which was forced to close over Christmas after violence, has been hit with a glass ban and forced to remove its pool table.
The Stanmer Park Tavern, in Fiveways, has had a series of new conditions placed on its licence following a mass brawl on December 22 when three doorstaff were injured.
Police shut down the pub immediately and it remained closed throughout the Christmas period.
At a Brighton and Hove Licensing Committee hearing on January 10, among the new conditions agreed for the pub were: no drinks to be served in glass after 6pm and the pool table to be removed from the pub.
Police will also monitor the pub for drug use, using special technology.
PC Steve Cheesman, of Brighton & Hove Police's licensing unit, said: "The Stanmer Park Tavern is an ideal community pub, however there were some elements that needed to be addressed before the pub could be allowed to reopen for business.
"We have held various meetings with the management and we will continue to support them so that the Stanmer Park Tavern can be maintained as a safe environment for its clientele."
A spokesperson for the Spirit Group, the pub's owners, said: "We have worked very closely with the police since the pub was closed.
"The new conditions were agreed in joint consultations on the best way to ensure a safe pub for our customers and staff. We are happy with the outcome."
