The arrival of the new year means the welcome return of the FA Cup to our television screens. It's at this stage that the opportunity for real upsets comes calling. Mix in a few hard-fought contests, and fans across the country, cheering on their heroes, are sure to have a weekend to remember.

Last year's final of the world's favourite club football competition will be remembered as one of the most compelling matches in the cup's 134-year history.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard had a pivotal role in the victory over West Ham, his two goals levelling the scores at 2-2 and 3-3. His second strike, right on the full time whistle, sent the match into extra time. The Hammers eventually went down 3-1 on penalties.

Now in round three of this venerable competition, Liverpool and the rest of the Premiership teams join the qualifying sides from the lower divisions.

The defending champions' first match is the pick of the ties, as they face long-term rivals Arsenal.

Both sides are doing well in the league, but a cup exit for either side at the first time of asking will be hard to swallow. Tune in to BBC1 on Saturday at 5.05pm to catch the match.

BBC1's earlier match brings the possibility of some giant-killing as Tamworth face Norwich City. Tune in from 12.10pm.

On Sunday, 2004 winners Manchester United face Premiership opponents Aston Villa at 2.00pm on BBC1, while Cardiff City take on 1991 victors Tottenham Hotspur. Coverage starts on SS1 at 3.30pm for a 4.00pm kick-off.

It's a terrific selection of matches, featuring the top five teams that have won the cup on the most occasions. In order of most wins, Man U (11), Arsenal (10), Spurs (8), Liverpool (7) and Villa (7) have serious credentials to pick up the cup this time. Watch and enjoy.
