Watch out for the Christmas Scrooge in your pub, is the warning of some new research.

Snack manufacturer Mr Porky said the most common lie told by skint punters is 'I haven't got any money on me'.

The pork scratching manufacturer surveyed 4,000 pub-going adults to find out more about what fibs we tell and who we fib to.

Second in the poll came the line 'This will be my last pint', followed by 'I'll give you a ring' and 'I'm on my way home'.

Our stinginess is even more apparent in the fifth most popular porky, 'I bought the last round'.

Sarah Nunn, from Mr Porky manufacturer Red Mill Snack Foods, said: "Traditionally pubs are a place for straight talking, so we were a little surprised to see this level of fibbing occurring.

"Fortunately most are only white lies and nothing too serious. In fact, telling a small porky or two is often part of the everyday banter that makes pubs such fun places to be."

The survey also revealed Brits lie most to our partners, followed by colleagues and employers.

Two thirds of us agree women are much better at telling porkies than men. And a shameless 61 percent say we don't feel guilty about lying to others.

The top 10 porkies are:

1. I haven't got any money on me

2. This will be my last pint

3. I'll give you a ring

4. I'm on my way home

5. I bought the last round

6. I'll give up tomorrow

7. Oh I've had this ages

8. You look lovely

9. I got stuck in traffic

10. I've got this terrible cold
