Bristol bar calls for apology from Wetherspoon
A Bristol bar which claims a rival Wetherspoon pub has published false pricing and serve temperature comparisons on window posters is demanding an apology.
Elbow Room is so incensed it wants Wetherspoon to put a full retraction in their window as large as the existing poster.
Wetherspoon's price and temperature comparison posters, and their 'Deal or no deal' posters, are designed to show pub-goers how much cheaper drinks are at its pubs.
Pictures of the posters at Wetherspoon's branch the Berkeley show comparative prices and temperatures for a pint of Kronenbourg 1664 and Amstel, as well as 'Deal or no deal?' price comparisons for Jack Daniel's & Pepsi and double Smirnoff & Red Bull.
Patrick Chessells, Elbow Room operations director, says the Bristol bar doesn't sell Kronenbourg 1664 or Amstel, and, while the prices listed for Jack Daniel's & Pepsi and Smirnoff & Red Bull are correct, they are for larger measures than the 25ml listed on the poster.
He said: "This is especially galling since they are a massive company, able to sell cheap alcohol due to their awesome buying power.
"We are a small pool lounge and bar, and they are a discounted pastiche of a local community pub, so one wonders whether the comparison is relevant anyway."
Eddie Gershon, spokesman for JD Wetherspoon, said: "We are aware of the call from the Elbow Room. Our manager maintains the information in the poster is correct.
"If upon further investigation we are found to be incorrect then we will take action."
