Plenty of interest in running a pub says GK
Greene King says it is seeing a huge interest from people wanting to take on one of its pubs.
It seems the ever-increasing red tape and the threat of the smoking ban are not putting people off the trade.
The Suffolk brewer and pub operator says it has received 22,000 enquiries this year - 46% up on last year.
David Elliot, managing director of pub partners at Greene King said: "We have received the highest level of hits to our website ever in recent weeks and are seeing a high calibre of people from all walks of life and professions looking to take on a pub as their next career move.
"As a pub landlord you need plenty of dedication and to enjoy exciting new challenges every day - it's hard work, but it's very satisfying."
One successful Greene King applicant is former scientist Dr Daniel Davis.
He left his laboratory for life behind the bar and has never looked back.
He said: "I wasn't happy with the direction my work was taking me in and I did consider numerous science-related options before finally deciding to leave the lab behind and do something different.
"It's a mistake to think that changing careers to run a pub is an easy option, it's a tough challenge, but with the partnership, support, training and back up afforded by Greene King, the hard work has been a lot easier.
"Now I'm thoroughly enjoying the freedom afforded by being self-employed."
