Are you sympathetic towards Richard Hammond?

Yes, I think you need presenters to do things like this. I don't think he was taking any more of a risk that the other presenters have done in the past. It was just an accident. Many people would love to drive those cars and I think the programme is very informative.

He knew the risk and it's part of the job. You pays your money and you takes your choice. My wife thinks he should have thought more about his family, but the Top Gear team do these things all the time. This one just happened to go wrong. I guess this particular challenge was very dangerous though - so maybe it was a bit irresponsible.

I wish him all the best but if you're going to get into a jet-propelled car that travels at 300mph, you have to accept the consequences. Jumbo-jets take off at 170mph so that's something to think about when you're getting into a vehicle that is supposed to be breaking the land speed record. It was his choice and I am sure he was aware of the risks.

The main thing is that he's making a speedy recovery. I used to race motorbikes and Minis - obviously not as fast - but you have to be aware of the risks involved. The air ambulance team did a fantastic job - we raise a lot of money for our local air ambulance. My advice to him is to get back behind the wheel as soon as he can.
