Metal detectors check pub and clubbers for knives
Drinkers in Coventry were asked to walk through a metal detector as part of a police clampdown on knives.
The portable detector was put up in the city centre on Saturday night to check punters for knives and other weapons.
It was the first time the airport-style device has been used in Coventry and revellers could choose not to walk through it.
However, police say they will continue using it in the city centre as a warning to people tempted to carry knives.
Sergeant Phil Radbourne, told the Coventry Evening Telegraph: "If you are not carrying an offensive weapon, then you have nothing to worry about.
"The detector will be deployed at various locations across the city centre at any time of the day.
"This is a tactic to reassure members of the public. Knife crime has not been rising. But we will not tolerate people carrying knives, and will use all the weapons we have in our armoury to stop people bringing them out."
