Pub marketing company Promotions on Tap has teamed up with BBC Sport Relief in a bid to get pub regulars walking that extra mile for charity on Saturday July 15.

Promotions on Tap - which provides a loyalty card scheme and marketing consultancy to some 200 pubs in the UK - recommends a fun event each month to help pubs increase sales.

It decided that the opportunity to get its pubs' customers to pound the streets for just one mile while raising money for charity was too good an idea to miss.

The idea was the brainchild of Suzanne Jenkin, customer services manager, who decided that pub customers will have spent too much time on their backsides watching the World Cup - which ends just six days before the big event.

She said: "The idea has certainly gone down well with our customers as it appeals to their generous natures when it comes to fund-raising. The World Cup Final takes place on July 9 so I thought it would be a good idea for pub regulars to take a bit of exercise in their own right having spent so much time in front of the pub television.

"It will be a challenge to persuade regulars more used to propping up the bar to burn leather on the roads. However, it offers good PR for pubs as well as added sales as punters will need to fortify themselves prior to the challenge and have a drink - purely for medicinal reasons - at the end."

Interested licensees can sign up if they visit www.sportrelief.com or give Suzanne a ring on 01709 331133.

Suzanne, pictured with colleague Roseann Girdlestone added: "It would be great if licensees could pull together, plan a one mile event that could start and ends at their own pubs and then donate any money raised to a very deserving cause. We are more than happy to help with posters and other promotional material, whether or not the pub is a customer of ours or not."
