A west-country licensed victuallers association has launched a campaign to get convicted sex offender Gary Glitter's records off local pub jukeboxes.

They also want to stop the singer from receiving royalties from his records.

Barnstable and North Devon LVA secretary Jean Knill has written to the Performing Rights Society (PRS) to request that Glitter be denied payment.

She said: "We feel very strongly that Gary Glitter is able to receive royalties even though he is incarcerated for sexual crimes against children."

Knill went on to say that all Barnstable and North Devon LVA members have been asked to remove CDs with Glitter tracks from their jukeboxes.

A spokesperson from the PRS said the only reason a performer would not receive royalties was if their music was not being played: "Our royalty payments reflect the public usage of members' music - therefore members only receive royalties if their music is being performed," he said.

Peter Harvey via email 10/05/2006"I was a DJ when Gary Glitter was in the charts and his music was at that time a dance floor filler, I dont feel sorry for him but its a great shame whats happened to a once talented person lets hope no more people in his popular position as a famous star put our kids at risk, as far as his music goes , well its always stuck in my mind as a great Glam Rock Fun era and I think it should remain that way, in memory as a great era. I still DJ at my own pub but sorry I dont play Gary Glitter any more but I dont like much of todays Guns and Drug music either they disguise it as hip hop or r & b and whats that doing to the kids???"

Steve Hunt via email 10/05/2006"So a licensed trade group wishes to introduce an arbitrary ban limiting free choice of music.we argued against this style of dictatorship by H.M. GOVT. in their interference in how we run our business, well theres our arguement for freedom to choose shot in our foot.

dont get me wrong i do not in any way condone the abhorent behavior of paul gadd (for that is the criminals name).the legacy of the fun music and the gang shows the entertainer gary glitter produced should be seperated (true this may be difficult) as now a highly entertaining and enjoyable part of music history is lost.

please, freedom of choice is to be protected in general not at the whim of self appointed groups should it be discretional.

Pete Smith, 11/05/2006The group are asuming that Glitter owns his own songs.
