Punch Taverns is hoping to help its licensees make the most of this summer's World Cup extravaganza.

The pubco is offering licensees a Profit Through Sport (PTS) course which will give them hints and tips on driving sales during the competition.

Licensees can also get hold of a Summer '06 marketing brochure.

Pubs need to position themselves as the perfect venue for watching live sport Kiernan Lynch, Punch.

Punch retail standards operations manager Kiernan Lynch said: "The World Cup will be the sporting event of the summer, although the techniques retailers pick up from PTS can be used to generate sales all year round. Pubs need to position themselves as the perfect venue for watching live sport and then provide a winning customer experience to encourage repeat business."

Punch retailer Wayne Clayton, who runs the Branston Arms in Burton upon Trent, attended a trial version of the PTS course.

He said: "I was impressed by the content. There are lots of good pointers for pubs showing live sport, particularly when it comes to pre-publicising events and creating a memorable atmosphere on match day."

Retailers can also access tips on arranging a summer barbeque, creating outdoor trading areas and applying for a Temporary Event Notice.

Punch's category manager Stephen Martin said: "The summer months mean more people looking to spend time in their local, eating and drinking as they enjoy the company of friends and family.

"We have pulled together a host of exciting ideas and competitively priced deals to help our retailers prepare for the summer and capitalise on the opportunities longer evenings and warmer weather present."
