What I Love about Pubs: Jennifer Wright
Jennifer Wright, Edinburgh, on what she loves about pubs.
It is with a fair amount of trepidation that I commit to paper the reasons for my love of pubs. Now nearing twenty-one, I should be familiar with the pub scene. I should understand the lingo, have the confident stroll from door to bar and be aware of the correct way to deal with the drunken guy in the corner who spits at you instead of whistling.
But I love pubs not for the banter, the community feel or even for the wine and beer. No, I go to pubs for two things - RTDs and puddings.
I love pubs because I can escape discrimination. It's the place I go to indulge in late-night desserts of whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
No one cares what you are doing; they can't see through the smoke. This isn't some snooty bar where the girls check who's got the least calorific drink. In a pub I can order with pride a toffee lumpy bumpy and a watermelon WKD.
My love of pubs may stem from a certain amount of immaturity but at least I am being honest with myself.
That's why I love pubs - they are places which allow me to be free from fear to express my desires and revel in the combination that is a fizzy strawberry drink and toffee cake with whipped cream.
