The Scottish Beer and Pub Association (SBPA) is celebrating its centenary this year with a range of special activities. The association, which recorded its original meeting as the Edinburgh Brewers' Association in December 1906 is planning a reception at the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood and a centenary dinner as part of its celebrations.

Chief executive Patrick Browne: "It's not every year that an Association marks it centenary and the SBPA is hoping to undertake a range of activities to mark this milestone and the long-standing contribution of Scotland's brewers and its licensed trade to Scotland's social and economic life over the last one hundred years."

Meanwhile, the association, which represents the licensed trade in Scotland, has spoken out news that Glasgow is to force pubs and bars to ban glasses and bottles. The ban is set to be phased in this month in the city centre and be rolled out to the rest of the city over the next 12 months. Licensees will be made to transfer alcoholic drinks into plastic containers or aluminium containers as part of the ban.

Mr Browne, said: "The decision to introduce this policy of 'glass free' is totally disproportion to the scale of the problem of so called 'glassings', which number just over one a week in the city and sends out totally the wrong message about Glasgow, its people and its hospitality industry. This is a decision, which will have minimal impact in solving the problem but will heap costs onto licensees and their customers for little benefit."
