Former Governor Archie Elsey dies
Archie Elsey, Governor of the Society of Licensed Victuallers for 1996-97 has died from a heart attack. He collapsed while carrying out voluntary hospital transport work. Aged 74, he leaves his wife, Maureen. Together they ran the George Inn at Thruxton, Hampshire. The family have requested that donations are made to Hampshire's Winchester Hospital Fund.
Places available on BII's new course
A number of free places are still available for Manchester hosts and pub staff on the BII's new course to promote responsible alcohol retailing. To kick start the launch of the BBIAB Level One Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing, 60 free places were offered to Manchester retailers in the on and off-trades. Bristol to reward well-managed pubs
A Venue Award Scheme has been set up in Bristol to reward well-managed pubs and clubs for acting responsibly. The scheme will be piloted in the city at the beginning of next year and venues will be awarded points and stars for managing drunken behaviour, drinks promotions, zero tolerance on drugs, security arrangements and health and safety.
Funeral details for Daniel Murphy
Daniel Joseph Murphy, better known as Don, passed away on Wednesday 23 November aged 52. He ran many pubs over a 20-year stretch in the industry, including the Orange Tree in Richmond. The funeral will take place on Friday 2 December at 11am at St John's Church on Boston Park Road, Brentford. The family has requested no flowers but charity donations can be sent to Chris Murphy at 113 Chertsey Road, Twickenham, Middlesex TW1 1ER.
Cancer honour for Hook Norton
Oxfordshire brewer Hook Norton has had a £168,000 cancer research study grant named after it in recognition of its fund raising efforts. Hook Norton has helped raise money for Leukaemia Research since 1986 after managing director James Clarke lost his sister, Victoria, to the disease.
