Property tycoon Robert Tchenguiz and City money woman Robin Saunders are locked in a battle to buy Spirit Group, the managed pub business valued at £3bn. Former Laurel pub boss Ian Payne is working with Tchenguiz, as is brewer Scottish & Newcastle, while Saunders is said to be working with another international brewer to improve her chances of winning the race to acquire Spirit. - Sunday Times

There's trouble brewing at Kent brewer Shepherd Neame. At its recent AGM the board of Sheps was forced to admit it had received a letter outlining a £130m sale and leaseback proposal for its pubs. The company has apparently rebuffed the approach, stating it was in the shareholder's best interests to remain a vertically integrated brewer. - Sunday Times

Luminar, the late night bar and club operator, is in line to snap up the best sites when the Nightclub Company breakup takes place. Nightclub operates 22 big venues and Luminar is believed to be interested in buying around 13 of its key sites, which are said to be worth nearly £10m. - Mail On Sunday

The Office of Fair Trading is to call on the country's four leading supermarkets to explain their business practices. In what many see as the opening salvo leading to a full investigation of the grocery sector, the OFT has written to Tesco, Sainsbury's, Wm Morrison and Asda telling them to be ready to be called before officials to defend their working methods. - Sunday Telegraph
