A Mozart opera is to receive its world premiere at canalside pub the Narrow Boat in Skipton, Yorkshire. The performance of the opera Bastien und Bastienna, which Mozart wrote in 1768, will be performed by the 30-strong Skipton Building Society Camerata.

It is believed to be the first live orchestral performance of a full mainstream opera in a British pub.

The Narrow Boat is owned by Knaresborough-based Market Town Taverns and the performance on Sunday September 18 will form part of its campaign to raise funds for Opera North's and Leeds Grand Theatre's Transformation appeal. It will be conducted by artistic director Ben Crick, 26, who is a regular at the pub.

Market Town Taverns operations director, Gil Richardson, said: "In launching our support for Transformation, we knew what we wanted to achieve but not where it would lead us. "We did not know that we had talented people like Ben among our regulars and are really thrilled at how this has come together and the campaign is progressing."
