The Litten Tree Blackpool

"It would certainly be a first if it did, but it all depends how secure and tamper-proof the card is going to be. The problem has been that there has always been more than one card available so one universal card might do the trick as long as it cannot be copied. We will just have to wait and see what the Government comes up with, but it could well be a major step forward."

Mike Sugden

NTK

Blackpool

"It's getting harder and harder to detect under-age drinkers especially in a town-centre pub like NTK. We probably ask about 100 youngsters for ID on a busy night and a foolproof card would be good as long as it worked effectively. Kids can copy cards from the internet at random these days so it would have to be one that is impossible to duplicate if it is going to be really effective."

Adrian Smith

Junktion 7, Nottingham

"Our staff ask for ID on a regular basis as a lot of young people like to visit a music venue like ours. Checking cards on a busy Friday or Saturday night is often a big problem for us and it's difficult to spot a copy in the heat of the moment. I would say any official national ID card would have to be something very sophisticated and impossible to copy if it is going to work."

David Brady

Gardeners Arms Thornton Lancashire

"An official national card would make our job 100 times easier and help prevent under-age drinkers getting into the pub. Our staff are busy every weekend checking IDs and it's no easy job detecting the copied ones. If a new card is devised and there was a swiping system at every pub and club door to validate it, then it would be a major bonus, but that might cost money."
