Staff at a Newcastle bar no longer have to worry about asking customers for ID, thanks to a computer which recognises them by thumbprint.

Around 400 people have registered on the database at the Blu Bambu bar, in the city's Bigg Market, since the computer was installed earlier this month.

To register customers have to bring along their passport or driving licence which is then stored. A thumbprint is also taken, which allows the computer to recognise them.

Dale Holden, the bar's manager, is delighted the scheme has been embraced by his younger customers. "It seems to be working really well. It means that anyone who looks young can come and register and then not have to worry about bringing their ID every time they want to get in."

The machine has cost the bar £5,000, but Mr Holden feels it is worth the expense.

"It gives me peace of mind as well, because I know that we are not letting underage people into the bar," he added.

Last month, the government introduced £80 fines for barstaff who serve under-18s.

Bob Senior, chief executive of Ultimate Leisure - which runs Blu Bambu, said: "With this technology we are saying to people who look underage - don't be a social leper and get left out. Come down to the bar and get yourself registered with your passport or driving licence and then when you come back, all you'll need is your thumb.

"We will experiment with it further at the Blu Bambu, see the ups and downs, and then look to bring it into other outlets."

Chief superintendent Chris Machell, area commander of Newcastle Police, said: "We support this initiative to tackle the problem of underage drinking. Schemes that ensure that only those over 18 get access to licensed premises help the police by discouraging children from trying to obtain alcohol."
