What the pubs say
The take-up is evenly split
"In summer we sell more Guinness Extra Cold than ordinary but otherwise it's pretty balanced. I think a lot of people buy it just because it's going to stay that little bit cooler in the glass for longer after it's poured. If everyone else is going to do it, I don't know where we'd fit in all of the extra coolers because they do take a lot of room."
Paul "Bez" Beresford, assistant manager, Hop Poles, Brighton
Super Chilled is our only Foster's
"We've only had Foster's Super Chilled for a few weeks and I'd say we don't tend to sell more of it because it's Super Chilled, it's just the only Foster's we have. Maybe more people ask for Guinness Extra Cold. I don't think people choose Foster's over the others because it's Super Chilled."
Donna Lizius, trainee assistant manager, Font, Brighton
We've gone for something different
"We want to have something new in Brighton. Everywhere you go there's Foster's and Stella, so we have got Heineken, plus Amstel and Paulaner. They're just as cold anyway."
Kay Piryesh, owner, Crave Bar
Those in the know choose it
"The regulars who know about Carlsberg ExtraCold drink it all the time, and usually if we offer it to other customers, they will go for the Extra Cold. Overall, we probably sell equal amounts of each. I know when I pour it, it always seems colder.Am I surprised they were so close together in temperature? Yes. Maybe our coolers need servicing."

and the customers
Extra Cold makes me feel cooler
"We were just saying when we came in that it was funny how we'd moved across to Guinness in the last couple of months, and it is because of Extra Cold. It's probably because of the connotations of old Guinness and it being considered a bit of an old man's drink. Extra Cold makes you think about drinking it and so we did on St Paddy's Day, when we went a bit mad. The Extra Cold really makes you feel that little bit cooler no pun intended."
Stuart Spencer, 31, off-duty bartender, drinking at the Hop Poles
I wouldn't want to pay extra
"I don't drink lager only very occasionally, during the summer. Extra cold lager sounds like it might make a difference, and it would mean I wouldn't have to put ice in it, which I do now at a barbecue, for example. Would I be prepared to pay more for it? Definitely not."
Fran Pearson, 55, consultant, drinking coffee at the Crave Bar
It appeals to my Aussie roots
"It's interesting, because it does seem colder than usual, but I hadn't noticed it was Super Chilled until you said. That would appeal to me because I'm from Australia and there, if you bought a beer it would be served in a glass that had been chilled in the freezer, so it would be extra cold anyway. That's the reason you can't have a pint in Australia because the beer would get warm too quickly."
Andrew Cummins, 20, student, drinking Foster's Super Chilled at the Font
Most pints are already cold enough
"Lager is probably my favourite drink when I go out. But, despite all the adverts on television, I've never really tried the Extra Cold versions. I find that most pints are already cold enough for my liking, plus I wouldn't want to pay extra for the privilege. In my favourite bar they serve beer in glasses that have been chilled in the fridge first so that probably helps."
John Ellerby, teacher, drinking a Coca-Cola in the Basketmakers Arms
