Managed operator JD Wether-spoon is to run its largest-ever beer festival next month.

The festival, which runs between 9 and 22 May, will see many pubs in the estate offering 50 different beers.

The festival beer list has been compiled by Dave Aucutt, of East West Ales, who said: "This is one of the best lists of beers we've put together. A lot of the beers will be appearing for the first time at Wetherspoon. We've really gone down the road of variety and choice rather than sticking to old favourites."

The festival aims to highlight the increasing number of light beers being produced since Deuchars IPA was named Champion Beer of Britain.

In the current edition of Wetherspoon News, chairman Tim Martin said: "We sell more real ale than any other festival vastly more than Camra's excellent annual Olym-pia extravaganza. As well as up to 50 ales per pub, we're also featuring Juliper, an imported lager from Belgium and Bonterra organic wine."

He added: "It's been with wry amusement that we have heard dark rumours over the years, emanating from competitors, that we achieve (our) pricing by buying beer which is near its sell-by date.

"But some our managers tell me that a few misguided souls actually believe this nonsense. Sorry to spoil a good rumour but our beer is the freshest in town, mainly because it sells so quickly after it arrives at each pub."
