A new cinema ad highlighting the "Jekyll and Hyde" effect that binge drinking has on women was launched yesterday by the Portman Group. The ad shows two contrasting images of the same woman: at the start she is sober and sitting in an office, but when she discusses her night out she is depicted as a drunken mess. "Alcohol affects your judgment; you might go out as the sensible Ms Jekyll, but quickly turn into the infamous Ms Hyde after a heavy drinking session," said Portman chief executive Jean Coussins.

Teenage girls binge drink more than boys

Teenage girls have overtaken boys in the binge-drinking stakes for the first time, according to new figures from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Drugs. The survey of 15 and 16-year-olds shows that 29% of girls admitted toat least one binge drinking experience within the last month compared to 25% of boys.

Licensee fined for festering meat'

An Oxfordshire licensee has been fined £9,000 after environmental health officers discovered food up to six weeks out of date in his kitchen. Inspectors found festering meat including a piece of lamb that had decomposed and turned green when they visited the Royal Sun in Woodstock Road, Begbroke. Licensee John Laight said the problems were caused by kitchen staff shortages.

Foster's backs free New Year's Eve travel

Foster's is to sponsor free travel in London on New Year's Eve. The New Year "No Worries" promotion will see free travel on tubes, buses, Docklands Light Railway and Croydon Tramlink between 23.45pm and 4.30am. Posters on London Underground, featuring the slogan "Stay out longer this New Year's Eve" will advertise the promotion.

Brewer launches anti-ageing beer

German brewer Neuzelle Kloster has released a beer thatit says can make drinkers feel healthier and look younger. The brewer said the "Anti Ageing Bier" is made by adding hot spring mineral water, algae and anti-oxidants. But the label says: "Please take care of your health and do not drink too much."

Duty-free Guernsey pays more for pints

Guernsey drinkers pay more for their pints than the UKaverage, despite duty being 57p a pint less. British drinkerspay an average of £2.17, but prices in Guernsey range from £2.15 to £2.50 and The Guernsey Consumer Group has asked for an explanation.
