The credit card terminal roll scam has struck the pub trade again, with another host almost being conned out of more than £200.

The Red Lion Inn at Little Compton, Gloucestershire was telephoned by Stockport-based Paper Roll Logistics while tenant Sarah Smith was away.

The caller told the pub's chef that Smith had ordered terminal rolls from them, and all that was needed was a confirmation of address and post code, and an authorisation name so the items could be dispatched. The chef gave the information.

The pub later received two till rolls and an invoice for £209.15. Smith said she always orders her rolls from HSBC, which charges £15.86 for 20 and the ones sent by Paper Roll Logistics were the wrong size anyway.

When Smith contacted Paper Roll Logistics, the company said the rolls would have to be returned at her own expense. The tenant said she needed to get a signature of receipt so had to send it via Royal Mail special delivery which cost £18.50.

Smith added that she is still getting letters asking for the full payment for the terminal rolls.

"It is such a cunning little ruse because the chef gave the address in all innocence," said the host.

"Quite apart from the way it was done it was an unbelievable price for terminal roll. We would have to buy about 11 or 12 rolls at normal rates to cover the cost."

Paper Roll Logistics was unavailable for comment.
