A Lincoln pub has boosted sales with its biggest ever annual beer festival, offering almost 50 guest ales.

The Strugglers in Lincoln, the current Avebury Taverns Cask Excellence Pub of the Year, saw turnover rise more than 50 per cent on a similar festival in 2003. Sales of soft drinks, wine, and food also soared during the two-week event.

Particular favourites among the real ales were two of the strongest: Fullers ESB and Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild.

Pub manager Alan Watts said: "This year's event was bigger and better than ever. It's the fourth year that we have held this festival and each year both the number of ales and the number of visitors we have attracted has risen considerably."

Avebury Taverns business development manager Richard Fletcher said: "Avebury Taverns fully supports the Strugglers' annual real ale festival and it's great to see that it has again attracted so much interest. Most pubs are geared towards bigger volumes and low-maintenance throughput, but initiatives such as this prove that it is possible for pubs to attract new customers by stocking quality cask ales."
