Licensees in and around Cambridge are urged to be extra vigilant following a spate of break-ins at pubs in the region.

Twenty-seven pubs have been targeted across southern Camridgeshire and 12 in the city itself since September. Six pubs were broken into within two days last week in the most recent spate of attacks.

Police believe the raiders are opportunists, who use simple techniques to break in to properties and grab items that are easy to steal.

The raiders forced open cellar doors or broke windows to get in, then fled with small amounts of cash from fruit machines or charity boxes, or cigarettes from cigarette dispensers.

All the attacks took place after closing time.

Police community safety manager Dick Moore said: "Landlords are advised to pay particular attention to their security arrangements."

He urged hosts:"Fit good quality window and door locks and don't forget the cellar access entry has been gained through inadequate security in all these areas and make sure all your security devices are activated before finishing for the night. Put cash and other valuables in a safe."

Police forensic teams have been examining the pubs. Anyone with information on the break-ins is urged to call DC Gavin Townsend on 0845 4564 564.

Masked gang in armed pub robbery

An armed gang who raided a Nottingham pub last week are still at large, police are warning.

Robbers forced their way into the Punch & Judy in Sherwood at around 3am on Monday last week. They overpowered staff and fled with cash and a plasma screen TV.

The thieves are thought to have been wearing balaclavas and dark clothing, and one carried a gun.

Police say they have no firm leads and are appealing for witnesses. Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Hallowe'en' raiders attack host

Robbers wearing Hallowe'en masks attacked a licensee in the early hours and left him needing stitches for a head wound as they fled with cash.

Up to six men broke into the New Dolphin Inn at Ford in Bradford in the early hours of Monday last week. They hit the host with a heavy object.

The men left the pub with a substantial amount of cash. Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Four charged with barman's murder

Four teenagers have been charged with the murder of barman David Morley.

The barman, who was 37, from Chiswick, west London, died after he was attacked on 30 October near Hungerford Bridge on London's South Bank.

Three of the teenagers appeared before Camberwell magistrates on Monday. Barry Lee, 19, a market trader from Fitzalan Street, Kennington, south London, was remanded in custody, along with two 16-year-olds who cannot be named.

Another male, a 17-year-old from Kennington, was set to appear at Camberwell magistrates on Tuesday as the Morning Advertiser went to press.

Last week the MA said that a friend of Mr Morley's also died in the attack. This was incorrect and we apologise for the error.

Man shot in busy Manchester pub

A man was shot four times by a masked gunman in a busy Greater Manchester pub on Sunday.

The 30-year-old was rushed to hospital with wounds to his arm, chest and abdomen after a man entered the Old Dog pub on Haughton Green Road, Haughton Green, and opened fire shortly after 10pm. The gunman, who police said was wearing a balaclava and dark clothing, then ran out of the front door.

The wounded man underwent surgery and his condition is described as stable.

DC Paul Smith said: "This incident took place in a very busy pub so there are a number of witnesses we would like to speak to." Anyone with information can call Ashton CID on 0161 856 9255.
