Fuller's is full of patriotic Pride
Those patriotic fellows at Fuller's were determined to keep St George's Day an entirely English affair when Capital FM DJ Johnny Vaughan broadcast his breakfast show from the brewer's George IV pub in Chiswick, west London, on Friday. English breakfasts and English ale were the order of the day, as bleary-eyed guests many called George, brought in to celebrate the occasion revelled in Vaughan's unique take on what it means to be English. But Fuller's press supremo Georgina Wald (it had to be a George, didn't it?) was forced to act quickly when the event was in danger of being gate-crashed by Jameson's Irish Whiskey. Representatives from the brand turned up at the door asking to be part of the celebrations. Wald evoked the Bulldog spirit and told them, in no uncertain terms, where to go. Aside from that little episode, the event went by fantastically. Snifter's highlights included: the town crier belting out lines from modern pop songs; the presence of two count them British bulldogs; and rousing renditions of There'll Always be an England by the ecstatic crowd. There was also an impressive response when Vaughan asked listeners to suggest things that are typically English. Caravans and fried breakfasts were among those that brought a tear to Snifter's eye. However suspicions were raised when one listener's response was "drinking Pimm's in the bath". Could this be another supplier trying to gate-crash the event? By George, indeed.
