Union Pub Company to reward top pubs
Union Pub Company (UPC) is looking to reward its top tenants as it launches its third annual awards.
The tenanted estate of brewing giant Wolverhampton & Dudley has revamped the awards this year, running with a number of new categories among the 12 honours up for grabs.
The 2004 judging panel includes the winners of last years UPC Pub of the Year title, Richard and Jackie Macey, of the Fountain at Clent.
Richard commented: "We were thrilled to win in 2003 and there is no doubt that our business has benefited from all the press coverage that we've received.
"We're delighted to be judging this time and hope our experience and knowledge can help others."
UPC licensees have until April 30 to complete their entry, with judging taking place between May and July.
The awards evening is due to take place at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham on September 30.
Phil Dixon, chairman of the judging panel, said: "What makes these awards different from others is the level of detail that we go into and the fact that they are judged independently, which gives them credibility.
"Also, it's not just a paper exercise, we visit every single pub that enters."
The Publican is sponsoring the Training Pub of the Year category. Other sponsors include Britvic, Brulines, Foster's, Johnson Diversey, NEC Eze Power, Propublican, Smirnoff, Stella Artois, Stowells, Strongbow and WDB Brands.
Stephen Oliver, UPC's managing director, said: "Having talked to so many previous finalists I have been amazed by their commitment, drive and innovative approach to running pubs in this difficult climate."
