Oldham licensees are urging customers to keep themselves safe over the Christmas period.

Pubs have joined with the Safe Street campaign to push the health and safety message to pub goers over the festive period. The campaign involves the distribution of 3,000 condoms within licensed premises to encourage people to act more responsibly.

Staff at licensed premises will be joining in by wearing t-shirts with the Street Safe slogan and posters and postcards will be displayed at pubs over the town.

Sergeant Gary Wheelhouse of Greater Manchester Police said: "At Christmas, people tend to drink too much alcohol and can find themselves in vulnerable situations.

"We do not want to spoil people's fun but we hope that by displaying Street Safe posters and postcards and distributing condoms, we will make people stop and think and enjoy themselves safely."

The Street Safe initiative is a campaign involving licensees, Oldham Council, Greater Manchester Police, Town Centre Partnership and Oldham Drugs and Alcohol Action Team.
