UK distribution of 5% Amstel stopped
Only one version of Heineken's Amstel will be available in the UK after the Bulmer's distribution licence was terminated. The 5% abv bottled version is being withdrawn as Heineken focuses on the 4.1% abv draught version. The cancellation of the Bul-mers' distribution contract follows that company's acquisition by Scottish & New-castle the contract had a change of ownership clause in place. Heineken has not ruled out introducing a bottled version of 4.1% abv Amstel in the future. "The Amstel brand benefits from a hugely positive awareness among drinkers in the UK, thanks in part to their enjoyment of it on holiday in countries like Greece and Spain, as well as the UEFA Cham-pions League sponsorship, and its popular Amsterdam heritage," said Simon Green, senior brand manager for Amstel UK. Heineken UK's sales force will be taking responsibility for selling Amstel to all on-trade national accounts. Turnkey, an independent on-trade sales company, will continue to manage sales to top-end independent outlets, building on success in securing listings for Amstel in a range of independent bars. "The Heineken UK sales force has established relationships with the national on-trade accounts through selling the Heineken brand, and it makes sense for them to take on the same role for Amstel," said Green. "We are very excited about the potential for Amstel in the UK.
